This site presents a selection of films that, in the humble opinion of the author, any true film buff simply has to have seen at one point in their life. Of course the guide will feature all the breakthroughs, all the cult favourites, all the classics of their respective genres. However, the guide will also feature a lot of films that are traditionally ignored by the usual “highbrow” critics, but are valuable works nonetheless, if only for their impact on popular culture. From the humble beginnings of cinema, to the golden years of Hollywood, to cheap but ambitious B-movies, right up to the downright trashy cult flicks, it covers a broad spectrum of the most wonderful stories ever projected to a screen.
Cinema has a mythical connection to human nature, to our dreams and thoughts and fantasies. Its pictures can take us to faraway places, and deeply touch our emotions. This guide aims to give you a selection of screen moments that you will never forget. It goes without saying that films are seen in the context of the social, political, and technological circumstances of the times in which they were produced. True motion picture art is timeless.
Offering trailers where available, full streams where films are in the public domain, the blog itself already gives you some instant watching material. But at its core, it is a guide to what you should buy or rent for your next film night, or what programmes to definitely tune in to should they schedule any of the films listed herein. Since it is usually not financially viable for today’s theatres to screen old pictures, I encourage you to create a fitting atmosphere at your own home, your own little film palace in which these masterpieces can deliver their full effect. And invite some nice people over if you like, because it is the atmosphere and company that truly make ‘cinema’ what it is.
Even though you might not like all of the films found in this guide, there are no duds here, and you will find that they represent the best and most significant works this still relatively young artform has come up with. Enjoy your journey, whatever worlds it may take you to.
